[message to copy]

Dear Representative                   ,

H.R. 751 calls for the House of Representatives to recommend the president award LTC (Retired) James “Maggie” Megellas the Medal of Honor.

1LT Megellas of Co.H/504 Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Div. was recommended for his ‘above and beyond’ gallantry on Jan. 28, 1945 at Herresbach, Belgium by his then Executive Officer, 1LT Edward Sims.

In 1999, fifty-four years later, Col. (Retired) Sims discovered his recommendation was downgraded to the Silver Star. He was shocked to learn that the citation of Megellas’ acts that day contained no mention of his single-handed attack and destruction of a Mark V Panther tank and crew that was firing on his platoon!

Numerous appeals by Col. Sims and others (NOT Megellas) since then requesting the Silver Star upgraded to the Medal of Honor have been turned down by the Army. Apparently, Megellas’ single-handed destruction of a 50 ton enemy killing machine in combat is of no particular significance because the Army still contends, with that inclusion, that the Silver Star remains the appropriate award! However, we are aware of only four other American soldiers in WWII Europe who single-handedly attacked and halted or destroyed enemy tanks in combat. All four heroes deservedly received the Medal of Honor!

Please go to www.medalformaggie.com for the complete, amazing story.

We are aware that this particular House bill is considered ‘private’. With such, there can be perceptions of favoritism, preferential treatment and prejudicial discrimination. That is NOT the case! We only seek consistency and fairness in awarding any combat medal, especially our nation’s highest military combat award! James Megellas, now 100, earned the Medal of Honor over 72 years ago! Please enthusiastically support H.R. 751 and bring justice to this amazing American patriot and hero and also pride and honor to Col. Sims, Co.H, the 504th PIR and all who serve in American Airborne forces around the world!

Sincerely,

[your name]

——————————————————————————————————————————————- I have an urgent, personal request! LTC (Retired) James “Maggie” Megellas is a 100 year old World War II hero. Many feel he should have been awarded the Medal of Honor, “our nation’s highest military combat award of valor”, over 72 years ago for his ‘above and beyond’ valor and leadership in the Battle of the Bulge. Because of an Army paperwork snafu, the full account of his actions of Jan. 28, 1945 was not reviewed and he subsequently received the Silver Star. This was discovered in 1999 by the person who put him in for the Medal of Honor. Despite that individual’s appeals and verifications, the Army refuses to upgrade Megellas’ medal. Therefore, we must get Congress to act! House and Senate bills have been issued and are currently in subcommittee. On separate occasions, four other heroes are credited for doing what this man did. All four men were deservedly awarded the Medal of Honor! The below website explains the situation and the need to correct this gross injustice to one of America’s most gallant WWII frontline combat leaders.

You and I appreciate and value justice. Our action is urgently needed NOW! Thank You!

All The Way!
